Indian MPs vote for president, Mukherjee set to win
NEW DELHI: Indian national and state lawmakers voted on Thursday for a new president, with former finance minister Pranab Mukherjee seen as a certainty to take up the mainly ceremonial post.
Mukherjee, the candidate of the ruling Congress-led alliance, is a respected conciliator, and as head of state he may play a role in who governs India after the general election due in 2014.
The president oversees the formation of a new government when no party wins a clear majority, and most observers predict a close result at the next polls given the poor economic outlook and the Congress administration's struggles.
The outcome of the presidential vote will be announced on Sunday, but Mukherjee, 76, has far more support than his rival,
Pakistan ready to facilitate Afghan peace process: PM
KABUL: Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Thursday met a delegation of Afghanistan's opposition party Afghan National Coalition (ANC) led by Dr Abdullah Abdullah and said Pakistan is ready to do, whatever was in its capacity, to facilitate peace in Afghanistan.
In a meeting held at the Pakistan embassy in Kabul, the prime minister said long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan is only possible through an intra-Afghan political settlement.
Prime Minister Ashraf said opposition groups can play an important role in the achievement of stability, progress and development in Afghanistan.
He said Afghans have the right to choose their governance system, whether presidential or parliamentary system. He said Pakistan abides by the principle of non-interference in the internal Affairs of Afghanistan.
Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, advisor on interior Rehman Malik and Minister of State for commerce Abbas Ahmed Afridi were present during the meeting.
The Afghan side comprised ANC leaders Younis Qanooni and Ahmad Wali Masood.

Tokyo conference on Afghanistan opens
TOKYO: A world conference aimed at charting a course for Afghanistan once foreign combat forces leave in 2014 got under way in Tokyo on Sunday.
Shortly after his foreign minister declared the meeting open, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told delegates: "It is an honour for Japan, as a nation that loves peace and hopes for the stability and prosperity of the international community, to co-host the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan."
Sunday's meeting is aimed at plugging the gap between what Kabul gets from its barely-functioning economy and what it needs to develop into a stable country.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka begin final Test today
PALLEKELE, Sri Lanka: Pakistan and Sri Lanka begin the third and final Test in Pallekele on Sunday seeking an exciting finale on what appears to be a result-oriented wicket.
Both sides were relieved that the greenish pitch looked different from the lifeless track prepared for the rain-hit second Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, which ended in a tame draw.
Sri Lanka, who won the first Test in Galle, are hoping to record their first series win in three years since defeating New Zealand 2-0 at home in 2009.
Skipper Mahela Jayawardene insisted the hosts will go all out to win the final Test even though a draw would be enough to seal the series.
Light rain has been forecast for next week, but the ground staff were confident the weather would not interfere with the cricket.
The Pallekele stadium, built in 2009 on the outskirts of the hill town of Kandy, has hosted two drawn Tests so far, both of which were interrupted by bad weather.
Pakistan vice-captain Mohammad Hafeez, who scored 196 in the second Test, hoped dry weather would enable the tourists to seek a series-levelling win.
The batting flourished during the Colombo Test with Azhar Ali joining Hafeez as the team's other century-maker in a first innings total of 551-6 declared after being sent in to bat.
Pakistan then dismissed the hosts for 391, grabbing the last five wickets for 21 runs, after centuries from Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan had lifted Sri Lanka to a comfortable 236-1.
Young left-arm seamer Junaid Khan claimed a five-wicket haul on a pitch that offered him no help and was deservedly named the man of the match in the batsmen-dominated Test.Pakistan had enjoyed an impressive run before the current series, winning seven of their last nine Tests, including a brilliant 3-0 whitewash of top-ranked England earlier this year.
But their hopes of clinching a 1-1 scoreline rest on how quickly they can dismiss Sangakkara, who scored an unbeaten 199 in the first Test and 192 in the second.

Constitution is supreme: CJP
KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Ifitikhar Muhammad Chaudhry Saturday said that the constitution was supreme, while in the eyes of law all the citizens of the country were equal.
CJP without mincing words declared no compromise could be made on the independence of judiciary. The chief executive lost his job on court’s action, under Article 5 all citizens were bound to be loyal to the state, he said.
Addressing the lawyers on the occasion of issuance of practice licences to the lawyers here, Chief Justice said that whatever position or post one holds the law was same for everyone. Action on contempt of court was taken against the chief executive for not obeying the court order and he lost his position.
Chief Justice said that he wanted the rule of law and the constitution in the country and added that it was mandatory for the citizens of the country as well as the foreigners living here to abide by the state’s constitution and the laws. He said that the law and constitution would be protected.
He further said that the judiciary could declare void actions in contravention of the constitution. The Apex court has already given verdict in unambiguous terms on this issue.
It was only the constitution that is supreme, which has to be followed. The constitution has given the powers to the higher courts and no compromise would be made on the independence of judiciary, he re-iterated.
