Cabinet meeting discusses ways to address power shortage
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Cabinet on Wednesday expressed resolve to settle the power shortage on "war-footings" and directed the Energy Committee to present its recommendations next week.
The meeting chaired by Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani here at the PM Secretariat held a detailed review of the energy shortage in the country.
Gilani said he would personally monitor the situation on a day-to-day basis and said he would preside over the weekly meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy.
A statement released at the end of the meeting said the Cabinet expressed the resolve to mitigate the sufferings of the people and for measures to address the power shortage.
"The Prime Minister emphasised the need of immediately halting of unscheduled load shedding," the statement said.
Secretary Water and Power in a detailed presentation to the Cabinet said the total installed capacity in the country was 16,000 MW, while 11,600 MW was being produced. The Secretary attributed the decline in generation to cold weather in Northern Areas, causing a shortage of 3500 MW, the statement said.
The Prime Minister said that every cabinet member shares the concern of the people who are suffering in the hot weather. He said it was government's top priority to meet energy demand and said all necessary measures be taken to mitigate the sufferings and overcome
the shortage.
The Cabinet meeting reviewed the implementation status of the decisions taken pertaining to the Commerce Division and was informed
that out of 60, 43 decisions have been implemented, showing a progress of 72 percent.
The Cabinet also approved the signing of a Draft MoU on Cooperation between NAIF Arab University for Security Sciences (NAUSS), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and National Defence University (NDU) Pakistan, in the field of Academic Research and Cooperative activities.
It approved in principle the draft memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Government of Pakistan and the Government of United Republic of Tanzania on Defence Cooperation and also approved in principle to enter into negotiations on an Agreement on Transfer of Offenders between Pakistan and Seychelles.
The Cabinet also approved ratification of the Agreement on Transfer of Sentenced Persons between Pakistan and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The Cabinet also gave approval for amendment to Pakistan Institute of Development Economics Act 2010 (Sub-section 9 of Section 17 of PIDE Act No. VIII of 2010, dated April 17, 2010).
Under the amendment, the quorum for meeting of the Senate shall be one-third, instead of two-thirds of its membership, a fraction being counted as one. (APP)
